Historical Details

During World War II, the Dutch East Indies, rich in oil, rubber, and strategic shipping routes, was a key focus for both the Allies and Japan. After the Netherlands fell to Germany in 1940, the colony was administered by a government in exile and served as an important Allied outpost in Southeast Asia. In 1941, in response to Japan’s expansion into China and French Indochina, the United States, Britain, and the Netherlands imposed an oil embargo that cut off roughly 80 percent of Japan’s imported oil, making the East Indies a primary target. The colony’s defense relied on the Koninklijk Nederlandsch-Indisch Leger (KNIL), a mixed force of Dutch, Indo-European, and Indigenous Indonesian soldiers. Although KNIL forces were larger than the invading Japanese units, they were unable to withstand the rapid, coordinated attacks of early 1942. Many surviving KNIL soldiers evacuated to Australia, where they reformed and retrained under Allied command, later participating in campaigns across the Pacific.
